Coffee Roasters Co-op stands up to bullying

Coffee co-operative Just Us! is standing up to bullying, raising nearly $105 for bullying prevention programs.

Yesterday, the company announced a partnership with PinkDay.ca to raise awareness of bullying by having employees purchase and wear pink T-shirts to work.

Workers at the Co-op’s four retail locations, as well as employees in the company’s head office in Grand Pre, will be donning the shirts every Friday this summer. That’s all leading up to Nova Scotia’s Pink Day on September 12.

“Just Us! Coffee is setting a great example for the community by their participation in this project,” PinkDay.ca co-founder Paul Kells said in a press release.

According to PinkDay's April MacLeod, Just Us! has purchased upwards of 70 T-shirts from the website. The cost to workers was partially subsidized by the employer.

The pink T-shirts are sold online for $14.99, with 10 per cent of proceeds directed to the Canadian Red Cross’ RespectED bullying prevention program.

The group is working with other merchants on Spring Garden Road to sell T-shirts,Buy Burberry Wtshirt-6 store, Custom Fit Stripe Shirt and more. including Charm Diamond Centres and Universal Properties. Shirts will also be sold to the public in Park Lane Mall on Thursdays and Fridays.

PinkDay.ca is a project by Kells and Travis Price, designed to raise funds and provide anti-bullying resources. Price was one of two students in Cambridge, NS, who in 2007 wore a pink T-shirt to school in solidarity with a bullied classmate.

The event drew international attention, and since then Nova Scotia has celebrated “Pink Shirt Day” on the second Thursday of every September.

“We are proud to participate in this call to action with PinkDay.ca,” founding Just Us! member Debra Moore said in the press release. “We encourage other businesses to follow suit and stand up to bullying.”

Just Us! came under public scrutiny this last month, when two workers from the Spring Garden Road café alleged they were fired for trying to form a union.

After media scrutiny and public protests, the co-operative reached a deal with the Service Employees International Union and baristas Shay Enxuga and Elijah Aliphat were given their jobs back.
